Foreword
The prolonged drought affecting much of the Murray-Darling Basin has resulted in significant reductions in water allocations to irrigation farms situated within the Basin. Forecasts of increasing water scarcity, particularly in the southern Murray Basin, have focussed attention on the challenging question of how best to manage the Basin’s water resources in the longer term.

ABARE was commissioned by the Australian Government Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts to survey irrigation farms throughout the Basin. The objective was to construct a baseline economic profile of irrigators by selected regions and industries. Additional funding for the survey was provided by the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

This report presents results from the irrigation farm survey for the 2006-07 financial year. It provides an integrated physical, financial and socioeconomic data set which can be used for monitoring, evaluating, and reporting changes in the irrigation sector.
