Total winter crop production in Victoria is estimated to have been around 5.6 million tonnes, 42 per cent higher than 2004-05. Seasonal conditions across the major cropping districts of Victoria were generally favorable over the growing season. |
Average rainfall was received across most of the state in September and October; above average rainfall was received in many districts of the Mallee and Wimmera. Significant rainfall also fell in early November in these districts. Most of Victoria experienced a slightly drier than usual December, although there were some pockets of above average rainfall, mostly associated with thunderstorm activity, which interrupted harvest. |
Average maximum temperatures across Victoria throughout spring boosted crop growth and development. The late dry start to the season was expected to significantly reduce yields; however, the improvement in seasonal conditions meant that average yields or better were achieved in most cropping regions of Victoria. |
Some crops in central and northern Victoria were reported to have suffered from insect damage as improved spring conditions resulted in significant pasture growth, supporting the spread of insects in these districts. |
Wheat production is estimated to have increased by 39 per cent to 2.7 million tonnes in 2005-06, despite a 6 per cent reduction in the area planted to wheat, reflecting improved seasonal conditions. |
Barley production is estimated to have reached 2.1 million tonnes in 2005-06, 61 per cent more than in 2004-05. Increased production reflects improved seasonal conditions and a marginal increase in the area planted. |
An estimated 302 000 tonnes of canola was harvested in 2005-06, 8 per cent lower than in 2004-05. Lower production largely reflects a lower area sown to canola as a result of the late start to the season. Dry conditions through the early part of the growing season combined with the late start significantly affected yields in both the southern and western districts. |
