| The Commonwealth does not accept any liability for any misadventure (whether by way of travel accident, loss of property, injury, illness or any like occurrence) you may experience while attending the conference or while in Australia. Speech
Your speech should be no more than 15 minutes (a 15 minute speech is approximately 1800 words). Feedback from previous Outlook conference delegates indicates the audience generally does not appreciate a presentation beyond the time limit, or which involves merely reading the formal paper.
At the conclusion of all presentations in your session, the chair will invite the audience to ask questions. To maximise opportunities for discussion in the time available, it is imperative that answers are succinct.
Presentation
You will need to prepare your own presentation. Please minimise the number of words and figures on each slide as well as the number of slides used in your presentation. The ABARE speakers are advised to have no more than 15 slides and to use graphics, charts and pictures in preference to text on the slides. Contact your liaison officer if you need any assistance with the production of your presentation.
Please email your presentation to your liaison officer by 30 January 2009 to ensure it will be preloaded onto a network computer at the conference venue. Email files should not exceed 5Mb. For larger files, please copy your presentation onto a CD and post it to your liaison officer. We recommend you bring a backup version on CD or USB drive with you on the day.
A laptop and data projector is available in each theatre.
Your paper/presentation will be made available on ABARE’s website on completion of your session, unless you advise otherwise.

The session requires each speaker to make a formal 15 minute presentation. Once all speakers have presented, the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions.
|
| Your role as chair |
 |
Be in the allocated theatre 15 minutes before the session begins to meet the session speakers and familiarise yourself with the theatre.
Open the session by acknowledging the session sponsor, if there is one, briefly introduce the speakers and provide a short introduction to the session.
Request members of the audience turn off their mobile phones while in the session.
Announce questions will be taken from the audience at the end of the session. If delegates prefer, they can write their questions and have an usher hand them to you to ask for them.
Introduce each speaker as they prepare to speak. Provide the audience with some information about the speaker. Please do not simply read out the speakers profile note in full. Your liaison officer will send you profiles and presentations for all of the speakers in your session.
Ensure speakers do not exceed their allocated 15 minutes. |
Oversee the question time at the completion of all speeches.
- Request any person asking a question to give their name and organisation and identify the panel member the question is directed to before posing the question.
|
|
- Ensure questions and answers are succinct and discussion flows. Repeat any questions if you think the audience may not have heard what was asked. Suggest one of the panel of speakers respond if the question is not directed to specific speaker.
- Pose questions to the speakers if no questions are forthcoming from the audience.
Ensure the session closes on time
Announce the titles of the next session. For example,”We will now break for lunch and will resume with the Grains, Horticulture and Dairy sessions at 2pm.” |
